Juliet's Balcony

The second largest city in Veneto is one of the most interesting and perhaps underrated in the country. Not often uttered in the same breathe as Roma, Venezia, and Milano. Verona is one of the most attractive cities in the entire world. Often referred to as the home of Juliet, it was the backdrop of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Her house with the famous balcony is on Via Cappello 27 (Romeo’s is said to be on Via Arche Scaligeri). Her tomb is supposedly below the church of San Francesco on Via del Pontieri. All of which are easily accessible.

Roman arena

Before its literary fame Verona was already an established city. The Arena, built in the 1st century is the most notable of the many Roman ruins scattered throughout the city. It is proof that Verona was always an important city in the region. Because of its importance, it was coveted by the Romans, the Ostrogoths, Lombards and Franks. It ended in the control of the Venetian Empire in 1405, and finally in the hands of the Austrians in 1814 before it was united with the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

Verona Madonna

Apart from the Arena district the other ancient roman relic the forum was converted to Piazza delle Erbe, "the Square of Herbs". Today it is the center of Verona, and its main market. Down the middle of the Piazza stands the capitello, the fountain known as the Verona Madonna, which symbolizes the town, and the Venetian column toped with the Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of Venezia. Behind the column is the Palazzo Maffei.

Torre dei Lamberti

Adjacent to Piazza Erbe is Verona's other Piazza dei Signori. On the right (if you enter from Via della Costa) is the 12th century Palazzo Ragione, the town hall. The Torre dei Lamberti offers a spectacular view of the Alps. Connected to Palazzo Ragione by an arch is the Palazzo del Capitano, the one time military headquarters, flanked by the Torrione Scaligero, a huge brick tower. Across the piazza is the Loggia del Consiglio, adorned by statues of Roman dignitaries with Veronese origins. In the center of the piazza surveying the activities stands a statue of Dante.

Basilica Sant'Anastasia

Not far from Piazza dei Signori is Piazza Sant'Anastasia. The church, Sant'Anastasia, began at the end of the 13th century but not completed until the 15th century. Frescoes by Michele de Verona and Pisanello adorn the Sacristy and the water stoups are especially interesting. On the street to the right of Sant'Anastasia and directly behind Palazzo del Capitano are the Tombe dei Scaligeri. The tombs lay in between the tiny church of Santa Maria Antica and their palazzo. To the left is Via Duomo, which leads you directly to the Duomo Santa Maria on the banks of the Adige River.

Castelvecchio

Along the same river between the banks and the street, Corso Cavour, is the grand Castelvecchio. Built by Cangrande II from 1355 to 1375, it houses one of the finest art museums in the region. Across from the Castelvecchio is the church of San Zeno Maggiore. One of the finest Romanesque churches in northern Italy, its bronze doors and triptychs are the highlights.
