Turin
The Shroud of Turin

The capital of Piemonte, Torino was also the capital of cultural and political life during the Italian Risorgimento. First founded by the Celtic tribe the Taurini as their capital in the 1st century, Torino was later taken over as a military base by the Romans and renamed Augusta Taurinorum. Later in the 5th century it became a Christian city where it remained under the Pope’s control until the 11th century. Then in 1065 the French Rulers of Savoy gained control on their way to conquering all of Italy. The Savoy remained as the rulers for almost 900 years, untill In 1861. Vittorio Emanuelle II rose to defeat the Austrians and the Kingdom of Italy is proclaimed with Torino as the first capital.

This older statesman city, full of noble monuments and palazzos, still remains a cultural, economic and industrial powerhouse throughout Europe. As the fourth busiest city in Italy, behind Roma, Milano, and Napoli, you can imagine how much there is to see and do.

Duomo

Starting at the Piazza della Republica, the main square, it is a short walk to Torino’s main Church, the Duomo located in nearby Piazza San Giovanni. The duomo dedicated to San Giovanni and constructed in 1498, is the only example of Renaissance architecture in Torino. Inside the church, behind the altar, in the Capella della Santa Sindone (Chapel of the Holy Shroud) you’ll find Torino’s prize religious possession, the Holy Shroud.

In the following Piazza Reale, is the lavishly decorated Palazzo Reale. The Princes of the house of Savoy lived here until 1865. Don’t be fooled by the plain building. Inside is the Sacla delle Forbici by Juvarra and the Armeria Reale "the armory". To the left of the Palazzo Reale is the church of San Lorenzo, the royal family’s church Baroque building designed by Guarino Guarini an architect famous throughout Torino.

Down Via Roma, Torinos’ main street, is the Palazzo Madame in the Piazza Castello. Originally erected in the 14th and 15th centuries it is built on the remains of the old roman gateway Porta Palatina. The façade was refinished by local Sicilian-Turinese architect Juvarra (Juvarra is responsible for many of the buildings in Torino). The first floor of the palazzo was converted to the Meseo d’Arte Antica, which includes its masterpiece "Portrait of the Unknown Man" by Antonello da Messina (1475).

Also on Via Roma you’ll find another of the numerous palazzos, the Palazzo dell’Academia delle Scienze, with an attraction that you may not expect. Inside there are two museums; The Museo Egizio on the ground and fist floors, has one of the richest collections of Egyptian artifacts in the world. The Galleria Sabauda, on the second and third floors, houses the private art collection of the Savoy. It is divided into various thematic, and chronological sections. Some of the artists include Giovanni Bellini and Fra Angelico.

Sitting caddy corner to the Palazzo dell’Academia delle Scienza is the Palazzo Carigno, another Guarini building. This Palazzo is dedicated to the Risorgimento with the Museo Risorgimento inside. This was the home of Vittorio Emmanule II, the first king of Italy (1861).

Returning to Via Roma the street opens up to the lovely Piazza San Carlo. Defined by its two churches side by side separated only by Via Roma, and its equestrian monument, the churches: on the right San Carlo and on the left Santa Cristina. Juvarra designed Santa Cristina’s façade, complete with candelabra. The monument, cast in bronze in 1838, is a tribute to Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy.

At the very end of Via Roma is the Piazza Carlo Felice. Alined with shops and café’s the interior of the piazza are lovely green gardens, which decorate the front of the Stazione Porta Nuova (Train Station).

Other historical sites throughout the city include: Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Parco del Valentino and Torino’s signature monument the Mole Antonelliana.

Aside from being a city filled with numerous historical monuments Torino also holds the distinction of being an economic powerhouse throughout Italy. Starting with the automobile company Fiat in 1899 and expanding ever since. In the 20th century Torino has become home to some of the largest companies in all of Europe.
