In the early 9th century, Sorrento
became free. In the middle ages, it alternated periods
of relative freedom under bishops and dukes with Gothic
and Byzantine dominations. It always fought victoriously
and at last was conquered by the Normans and subsequently
shared the fate of Naples. In 1558, notwithstanding
a life and death struggle, won by treason, it was
ruthlessly sacked by Turkish pirates. Then, the inhabitants
surrounded their town with high walls, following the
ancient Roman layout and built lookout towers along
the coast. In 1799 it joined the Neapolitan Republic.
Then it was a theater of wars between Republicans
and Bourbonnais’s, but since the 18th century Sorrento
became a sought-after seaside resort, which still
today holds the same reputation.
