Long known as the archenemy of Firenze, Siena is another one of the historic cities of the region. History has told us that the two cities feuded for many years causing a certain dislike for each other. But either way there is no denying that although Florence has the more heralded history, Siena has its share of beautiful surroundings.

Duomo di Siena

When one comes all they need to do is look around to see its flamboyant ensemble of medieval buildings. The city itself is a work of art. The churches and buildings all beautifully situated and constructed to give you a feel like no other. The valley it is situated on makes the cities architecture that much more exciting. Unlike Florence it is recommended that you spend most of your time viewing this cities beauty from the outside. A simple walk around will show you the true beauty of this test of time.

Palio

The center of Sienese life like all other Italian cities is in its main piazza, Piazza del Campo. Piazza del Campo is made famous for its Palio. A twice a year event (July 2, and August 16) the Palio is a horse race around the entire Piazza. Each horse represents a section of the city, a tradition that began in the 1600�s. The rules are there are no rules, just win, even if bribery is the only way. On the north end of the Campo is the Fonte Gaia.

Torre Mangia

The Palazzo Pubblico with its incredible Torre di Mangia, named for a glutton that was in charge of the bells, is the symbol of the Siena skyline. The 13th century Duomo with its façade by Giavanni Pisano is the city greatest architectural accomplishment and a must see if you are in Siena.
