Perugia

If Umbria is the heart of Italy, then Perugia is the heart of Umbria. The capital city, with its many faces: ancient hill town high above the Tiber, Renaissance city filled with art, and a fast paced modern city with its two universities and chocolate, give Perugia a well deserved reputation of style and elegance.

Fontanna Maggiore

If Perugia is the heart of Umbria than Piazza IV Novembre is the heart of Perugia, with its main artery Corso Vannucci, named after home town painter Pietro Vannucci (Perugino) leading into it. At the center of Piazza IV Novembre lies the Fontanna Maggiore, built in the 13th century. To the rear is Perugia' s 15th century duomo, the cathedral of San Lorenzo with its best exterior feature the Loggia di Braccio Fortebraccio. Across from the duomo is the Palazzo dei Priori, the civic center of Perugia since 1297. Inside on the third floor is the Galleria Nazionale dell' Umbria. This gallery boasts Umbrian artists as well as Florentine artists.

Rocca Paolina

At the lower end of Corso Vannucci is the Piazza Italia. This is an interesting piazza because its streets were reconstructed to support the Rocca Paolina, the Popes’ fortress. Since then the hotels and buildings of Piazza Italia have replaced the fortress. From this piazza you can access the underground quarter and its main street Via Baglioni Sotteranea. From this street you can enter the Baglioni palaces. The Baglioni family ruled Perugia and was notorious for being murderous gangsters. They even tried to assassinate Pope Julius II. On top of their palace lies the Giardini Carducci; they are public gardens with an excellent view of the Umbrian countryside.

Collegio Cambio

Also on Corso Vennucci is the Collegio del Cambio, (Bankers Guild) who' s chapel was decorated by Perugino and his pupil, Raffaello. With this ticket you can also visit the Collegio della Mercanzia, located at the far end of Palazzo dei Priori.

San Domenico

Outside the center of Perugia many of the sites are spread out. It could take some time to walk and see them all, but we do suggest going south to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale dell' Umbria, which is next to San Domenico, Umbria' s largest church. You will be on Corso Cavour, if you continue south on this road you will pass through the Porta San Pietro and end up outside of the original city. Follow this road and you will find San Pietro, This is Perugia' s most decorated church with the ceiling painted by Perugino.

Modern day Perugia is famous for chocolate. Perugina chocolate is famous all over the world. We suggest getting as much as you can while you are here.
