Padua

At one time this city was the most prosperous of all cities in the Roman Empire. But like many of the cities in the Veneto Region, it fell under Venetian control in 1405, until Napoleon arrived in 1797. Padova has always been a city known for intellect, art and religion. Its university is the second oldest in Italy, and its religious tradition has caused it to be a focal point for pilgrimages, particularly the Basilica of Sant’Antonio and the Capella degli Scrovegni is an art historians dream.

Padua, Italy
Piazza dei Signori

The city is separated into two parts, north and South. In the northern section is Padova's Piazza dei Signori dominated by the Palazzo del Capitano. Inside the palazzo is the Corte Capitano, an old 14th century art school. Flanking the Palazzo Capitano is the Loggia della Gran Guardia. Separated by a group of buildings but also on Via San Clemente is the Piazza della Frutta.

Capella degli Scrovegni

Continuing in the north of Padova you'll find the Chiesa degli Eremitani and its attachment the Museo Civico agli Eremitani. Finally tucked away in the in a corner away from busy streets is the Capella degli Scrovegni. It contains, what may be considered the most important artistic masterpiece painted on the walls of a structure outside of Rome, a series of 39 frescoes by Giotto. The Chapel was built in 1304 and the frescoes painted from 1305-1310. It is the prize possession of Padova.

Piazza della Erbe

A stroll through southern Padova is an enchanting experience. The beautiful floral of Piazza delle Erbe only highlights the main structure, the Palazzo della Ragione, the medieval courthouse. Connected to Piazza delle Erbe by Via Manin is the Piazza del Duomo. The 12th century church contains frescoes by Giusto dé Menabuoi.

Basilica di Sant'Antonio

On the other side of town is Padova's religious center at the Basilica di Sant'Antonio. Sant'Antonio is the patron saint of Padova. His remains rest in the altar of the Capella del Santo. Numerous Frescoes and high reliefs by several artists, including Tiziano, make this a must see. Outside you'll notice an Equestrian Statue by Donatello.

Caffe Pedrocchi
