Naples

The city was originally colonized around 725 B.C. The Greek colonizers reached the coast and founded Cumae, which in a short time controlled the bay. Around 650 B.C. Cumae founded Palaepolis (old city) an turned it into the new Cumaean foundation of Neapolis (new city), around 470 B.C. In the old city Neapolis soon replaced Cumae in the control of the bay, which is now known as the Bay of Naples.

Under Roman control, some military colonies were founded; Puteoli (Pozzuoli) had a strong commercial position and replaced Neapolis as the most important port of Campania. Degraded to the level of Roman municipality in 90 B.C., Neapolis stuck proudly to its Greek origin, and even retained Greek as its official language.

Castel Nuovo

Around 350, after the legalization of the Christian religion, the Greek Roman core of Naples underwent many changes with the building of churches and monasteries. In 476 Romulus Augustulus, the last Emperor of the Roman Western Empire, died here in the "Castrum Lucullanum" (the present Castel dell'Ovo).

Between 763 and 1139 the city, was a cultural center and an important trade center with the East. Naples was later annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily by the Norman Ruggiero II until 1266. Palermo was the capital of the Kingdom, but Naples was the main cultural center. From 1266 to 1503, Naples replaced Palermo as capital of the Kingdom of Sicily (now also called Kingdom of Naples)

The city was still shaken by dramatic events such as the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631, the revolution led by Masaniello in 1647, the plague that killed one third of the people in 1656 and an earthquake in 1688.

On September 7, 1860 the triumphal entry of Giuseppe Garibaldi freed the city from the Bourbon control and on October 21st 1860 Naples was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy under Victor Emanuel II.

With such a complex and prestigious history dating back to the ancient Greeks, Napoli has grown into the third largest city in Italy, filled with buildings and artwork that tell the story of its unique past.

• Central Napoli

Piazza del Pebliscito

The center of Neapolitan life revolves around the Piazza del Pebliscito; semicircular piazzas headed by the church of San Francesco di Paola and at the other end the Palazzo Reale. To the left side is the Teatro San Carlo. Behind the Palazzo Reale and within a short walking distance to the Castel Nuovo built in 1282.

Capella di San Severo

Traveling north the next site is the grand church of Santa Chiara on Via Benedetto Croce. Also look for the church of Gesu Nuovo in the piazza on the same street. On Via B. Croce is the church San Domenico Maggiore, next to it you’ll find the Capella di San Severo. Also in this area across the street in piazzetta Nilo is the Church Sant’Angelo a Nilo.

Around the corner on Via San Giorgio Armeno is the church San Giorgio Armeno. Next to that, the Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore. On your way to Via del Duomo and stop at The Church of Girolamini with its connecting Quadreria dei Girolamini housing an impressive collection of artwork.

• North East Napoli

The Duomo di San Gennaro, dedicated to the patron saint of Napoli, is a 14th century cathedral that underwent numerous changes over the years. The church and its chapel contain the relics of the saint who was martyred in 305 A.D.

Porta Capuano

Heading east you will end up at the Castle Capuana, the one time home of Federico II, which today has been turned into a courthouse. The castle stands in Piazza de Nicola, also in the piazza is Italy’s most elaborate gateway or Porta, the Porta Capuana completed in 1490.

Walking the streets of Napoli, it is easy to see the enormous catholic following; there is at least one church per "strada" in the old city. Each one has a unique quality and taking a moment to look in any of them could uncover a treasure not described in any book.

• Northern Napoli

Museo Archeologico

The most impressive sight in all of Napoli is not a church nor palazzo, but the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. It occupies a group of 16th century buildings that were originally intended to house the royal cavalry. Today it houses the most impressive Greco-Roman collection in the world. Sculptures, mosaics, silver, ivory, and clay objects, mostly recovered from Pompeii and Ercolano, highlight the museums collection.

• Outskirts (#24 bus line)

Museo Capodimonte

Not far from the Museo Archeologico, on the outer edges of the city, is the Museo di Capodimonte. Originally the Palazzo Capodimonte, named for the ruling family of Napoli, it overlooks the entire city from high above. Inside the Museo Capodimonte an impressive art collection, mostly comprised from the Farnese family. Many of the Renaissance portraits by such artists like Giovanni Bellini and Titian depict various members of the family. Also on the outskirts of the town are the Catacombe di San Gennaro, the original burial place of the saint, dug out of volcanic rock. His remains were transferred in the 6th century.
