Vesuvius looms
over Pompeii |
Campania’s roots far surpass those
of Lazio and its capital of Roma. First settled by
the Etruscans and later by the Greeks, when Rome and
most of Lazio were not much more than fields and campsites.
It was later developed and coveted by the Romans and
those that followed. The farmland around the region
was enriched by the volcanic activity and produces
a variety of crops including the largest tomato crop
in the country (a major ingredient in the gastronomy
of the region). The seaport made Napoli easily accessible
to outsiders and enhanced the exports of the region.
All of these factors helped make Campania one of the
richest regions in all of Italy.
