Bologna Italy

Ever since its conception by Etruscan settlers Bologna has always been at the "Crossroads" of the country. Located at the junction of Via Aemilia and the main road over the Apennines, Bologna has always been and still is the central focus for traveling throughout Italy. (In fact when traveling by rail in Italy be prepared to almost always stop in Bologna when crossing from one side of Italy to the other).

Bologna

Characterized by its medieval towers, which are the trademark of the city, it is a community, which is known for its higher education and preservation of the past. The municipalities of Bologna work very hard to keep the city as well preserved as it is, so don’t be discouraged when you have to pay "l’ingresso" (fee) to get into museums, when you walk around the city you will surely notice where the money is going.

Bologna
Palazzo de Re Enzo

The historic center of Bologna, the "fonte" of Bolognese life revolves around its major piazza, Piazza Maggiore. Tucked away in the corner of Piazza Maggiore, you can see the Piazza Nettuno, Decorated by Giambologna’s statue of Neptune. Adorned by brick buildings and porticoed streets these piazzas are occupied by not one, but two palaces; the Palazzo de Re Enzo and the Palazzo del Podestà. Also a part of the Piazza Maggiore is flanked by the Palazzo Comunale, on the west side. Inside the Palazzo Comunale the are two museums: the Municipal art Collection, with works by the Bolognese school, and the Museo Morandi devoted to the Bolognese contemporary painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964). Opposite of the Palazzo del Podestà is the Basilica of San Petronio designed by Antonio da Vicenza (1390), it is the largest structure in the piazza.

Museo Morandi

To the left of San Petronio is Via dell’Archiginnasio. On this Street lies the Museo Civico Archeologico (Italy’s finest collection of antiques dating as far back as the Etruscans). Further down you’ll find the Archiginnasio, part of the old university.

Bologna
Due Torre

If you walk from Piazza Maggiore over one street to Via Rizzoli you can see the remains of the original Via Aemilia. To the east is the Piazza Porta Ravegnana, which is characterized by the famous Due Torre (Two Towers) built in 1119 as a competition between two Bolognese families.

In Bologna
Piazza S. Stefano

Near the towers is the monastery of Santo Stefano, made up of 4 churches and 2 chapels. Founded by St. Petronius, the largest is the Crocifisso, built in the 11th century. To the left is San Sepolcro containing the Tomb of San Petronio. Also near the towers is Via Zamboni, where the composer Rossini (The Barber of Seville and William Tell) studied from 1806-1810 in the Conservatorio. In the same piazza is San Giacomo Maggiore, (1267). Later it was altered by the Bentivoglio family to become their family church (they were the prominent family in Bologna from 1401-1506).

The University of Bologna is the oldest in Europe. Now famous for medicine and sciences Bologna was originally known best for law. It is alma matter to names such as Copernicus the astronomer and Vacarius who founded the law school at Oxford.

Finally while you are in Bologna go South of the Piazza Maggiore to Via Garibaldi. On this street you will find the church of San Domenico (1251). Inside lies the remains of Saint Dominic. On his tomb the Arca di San Domenico is a masterpiece which depicts the life of Saint Dominic.
