Amalfi Coast

Some Romans who ship wrecked on its coast founded Amalfi in the IV century. The seafaring cleverness of its inhabitants made stand out from neighboring towns. It also distinguished itself having its own currency, and became famous for its naval shipyards, where vessels for other countries were also built.

Amalfi

In 849 the ships of this republic, together with the fleets of Naples and Gaeta, succeeded in defeating near Ostia the Saracens that were getting ready to attack Rome. In the 11th century Amalfi reached the top of its greatness, and succeeded in trading with all the rest of the world. In that period the inhabitants of Amalfi built churches and hospices, also in the far Jerusalem, where Gerardo Sasso da Scala founded an order, that later became the order of the knights of Rhodes and then the order of the knights of Malta. The town declined and in 1073 was conquered by the Normans.

Today it is the center point of the coast that bears its name, stretching from Sorrento and winding around to Salerno. In between the coastline consists of rocky cliffs and beautiful beaches that have become some of the most fashionable in the world. The towns along the cost have grown into resorts with lavishly expensive hotels. Some of the Towns like Sorrento, Positano and Ravello have distinguished themselves as the most fashionable but at the same time offer the most exquisite views along the coast, catering to the rich and famous celebrities are often seen around these small coastal towns. Outside of the more fashionable towns, reasonably priced vacations in towns like Atrani, Minori, Furore and Erchie can be booked. These towns offer the same culture and atmospheres as the more expensive towns…just for less money.
