Italvista is honored to
feature the Italian masterpiece - Il Capriccio of Whippany,
New Jersey as our charter restaurant feature.
Founded
in 1984 by chef-owner Antonio Grande and his
wife Clara and styled after the famous Andrea Palladio's
Venetian architecture popularized in the 17th and 18th
century, you will be swept into this sumptuous décor
of European Tiepolo-type baroque frescos. With Antonio's
vision, that everything: decor, ambiance and food must
all be related is beautifully integrated in everything
you see, hear and taste. This is evident everywhere your
eye glances. From the magnificent paintings to the elegantly
hand-carved, imported marble bar from Italy - Antonio's
own design.
Antonio's
creative cuisine has been consistently critically acclaimed
by such leading publications as The New York Times, The
Star Ledger of Newark and New Jersey Monthly Magazine.
Billed as "the complete Italian cultural experience"
with rave reviews of 3-½ stars, Il Capriccio delivers
not only on cuisine and ambiance but also on meticulous
service which is evident with the tuxedoed wait staff
who, in addition to announcing the evening specials with
poetic charm, are inconspicuously filling your wine glass
and sweeping crumbs. Of course, Il Capriccio is not Antonio's
first business. After coming to America in 1973 from the
province of Cosenza in Italy, he established himself as
chef at San Remo in West Orange, NJ and in 1976 opened
his first restaurant, Belvedere, in Clifton, NJ. The couple
worked to introduce true Italian cuisine to Americans
who up to then had thought of "lasagna" or "spaghetti
and meatballs" as Italian fare. Il Capriccio has
been a family business for 17 years. Antonio and Clara's
son, Natale, works side-by-side with his father as sous
chef, while their nephew, Salvatore LeRose, greets customers
nightly as head maitre d'.
The
"creme de la creme" ingredients - the finest
cuts of meat, fresh-picked vegetables, fragrant herbs
and spices, exquisitely fresh fish and their own farm-
grown organic summer vegetables - are lovingly combined
with meticulous care, lifelong experience, and a passionate
appreciation for fine dining and good health. The temperature-controlled
wine cellar at Il Capriccio has been given the Award of
Excellence by the acclaimed Wine Spectator, over 600 selections
and a stock of approximately 20,000 bottles from moderately
priced to exclusive reserve wines. Wine connoisseurs eagerly
look forward to their gourmet wine tasting dinners held
at Il Capriccio seasonally.
